Will (Pine) er en av flere unge menn som blir hyret inn for å erstatte de eldre og mer erfarne - men også dyrere - arbeiderne i et togfirma. For Will er det kun lønnen og mulighetene for en videre karriere som betyr noe. Han blir plassert i et team med erfarne Frank (Washington), en ansatt som snart må gå av selv om han elsker både jobben sin og tog. En serie tabber fører til at The Beast, et tog fullt av farlige kjemikalier og så massivt at det knuser alt i sin vei, ruller ut fra togstallen. Myndighetene sender ut flere avdelinger for å få kontroll over det løpske toget, men de mislykkes alle sammen - og toget har nå stødig kurs mot en liten by, noe som vil bety total katastrofe. Two major lines are covered almost in their entirety, from track-side and from the cab. Trains dating back to the early 1900s burn up the Illinois countryside at speeds which rival those of modern day rapid transit.
