This film is one of the most popular pictures of Slovak cinema and relates the story about the legendary folk hero and brigand Juro Jánošík [1688-1713] and the social situation in Slovakia of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The first part talks about Jánošík's childhood, studies and return to his native village. In the second part Jánošík leaves for the hills, where he organizes his band of brigands and starts an anti-feudal resistance. The film concludes with Jánošík's execution.

He was left an orphan as a small boy after a local lord murdered Oleksa's mother. After spending his childhood in exile in the mountains, he returned as a grown man to avenge his mother's death. Oleksa gathered followers to begin a crusade against the lord, but destiny made other plans for him.
Abdelkader ibn Muhieddine (en arabe : عبد القادر بن محي الدين (ʿAbd al-Qādir ibn Muḥyiddīn), aussi connu comme l'Émir Abdelkader, ou Abdelkader El Djezairi (Abdelkader l'Algérien), né le 6 septembre 1808 à El Guettana, dans la régence d'Alger, et mort le 26 mai 1883 à Damas, alors dans l'Empire ottoman et dans l'actuelle Syrie, est un émir, chef religieux et militaire algérien. A peine agé de 20 ans ans il fédère les tribus et mène une lutte contre la conquête de l'Algérie par la France au milieu du XIXe siècle. Après sa reddition, il est tenu en captivité en France avant de partir en exil en Syrie où il se consacre à la poésie et noue des relations de grande amitié avec Paris qui le couvrira d'honneurs après être intervenu en faveur des chrétiens persécutés en Syrie, il s'interposera par la force pour protéger les familles chrétiennes venues se réfugier en nombre dans le quartier des Algériens. Il en sauve près de 1 500 d'une mort certaine.
