Ved De Olympiske Lege i 1972 blev de israelske atleter taget som gidsler og siden myrdet af den palæstinensiske terrorgruppe Black September. Det udviklede sig til en tragedie og som kostede 11 israelere livet. Efterfølgende rekrutterede den israelske regering en gruppe Mossad agenter, som fik til at opgave at efterspore og derefter henrette dem, der var ansvarlige for aktionen.
Nazityskland, 1943. Krigen er i fuld gang, og en lille flok universitetsstuderende, der kalder sig 'Hvide Rose', bekæmper med al magt Det tredie Rige. Den eneste kvinde i gruppen er Sophie Scholl. Tyskland efter sammenbruddet i 1945. Til det totalt ødelagte land ankommer amerikaneren Leo Kessler, hvis forældre var tyskere. Hans onkel har skaffet ham ansættelse ved jernbanerne. På togrejser gennem landet bliver han vidne til opløsningen. Han møder Katharina. Hun er datter af jernbaneselskabets direktør, som er tvunget til at samarbejde med de allierede, men begår selvmord. Katharina er i høj grad interesseret i Leo. Det viser sig imidlertid, at hun har tilknytning til de såkaldte varulve, en gruppe fanatiske nazister, der gennemfører terroraktioner mod de allieredes besættelsestropper og bl.a. bruger små børn ved aktionerne. Da Leo og Katharina er blevet gift, vil varulvegruppens leder Siggy presse Leo til at hjælpe med en sabotageaktion.
Da en gæst på hotellet pludselig dør, overtager den udbrændte journalist David Locke (Jack Nicholson) hans identitet. Med den afdøde mands aftalekalender som guide rejser Locke rundt i Europa og Afrika og holder møder med farlige våbenhandlere og bliver forelsket i en forførende ung kvinde (Maria Schneider). Men hans spændende og nyfundne frihed er ikke uden omkostninger, og Locke indser lidt efter lidt, at han er ude på meget dybt vand. Jack Nicholson leverer en imponerende præstation. Editor Eckernförde has come into the possession of an audiocassette that contains a recording of the last minutes of deceased politician Uwe Barschel. The circumstances of his untimely death have never been completely resolved - until now. Unfortunately, the editor's daughter Nina accidentally takes the tape with her to Munich, where she is about to visit her paralyzed Mom in a sanatorium. When this information reaches the CIA and the BND, both organizations compete to get hold of the tape. Meanwhile Erkan & Stefan, two loveable wannabe supercheckers from Munich, are assigned as bodyguards for Nina - of course, they are expected to mess up their job, so that the tape can be retrieved. But the two friends prove to be a bit more streetwise than CIA or BND ever expected.

Luka Banjanin is an unemployed young man living with his parents in Belgrade. He hangs out with few devoted friends who, like him, are yet to find place in a society that discarded young intellectuals. He plays saxophone and dreams about going to Oktoberfest, the annual beer festival in Munich, but he's being unable to get passport because of a smaller drug incident he had in the past. Totally careless about his long-term girlfriend, he suddenly falls for a mysterious woman who seems to appear in the same places as him, and then vanishes as quickly as possible. Believing that he's at the wrong place at the wrong time, Luka wanders from one misadventure to another, gradually losing the contact with reality and living out his own Oktoberfest in his mind.
