Film Pianista je príbehom Wladyslawa Szpilmana, skvelého pianistu a uznávaného interpreta Chopinových skladieb. Píše sa rok 1939 a Szpilman má 28 rokov. Poľsko je napadnuté nemeckými vojskami, ktoré čoskoro prichádzajú aj do jeho hlavného mesta Varšavy. Takmer okamžite sú uplatnené tvrdé reštrikcie voči tunajšej židovskej komunite. Szpilman a jeho rodina - rodičia, brat a dve sestry - žili až doposiaľ spokojným životom, čoskoro sú však tiež donútení podriadiť sa ponižujúcim pravidlám. Okrem toho, že im dochádzajú peniaze a jedlo, musia pod hrozbou prísneho trestu nosiť na rukách Dávidovu hviezdu. Nátlak sa postupne zvyšuje a rodina je na tom stále horšie.
