U Španjolskoj 1944. godine, neposredno nakon Građanskog rata, djevojčica Ofelija (I. Baquero) odseli se zajedno sa svojom trudnom majkom očuhu Vidalu (S. López), okrutnom vojnom zapovjedniku Francove vojske. Kako bi pobjegla od ružne svakodnevice, Ofelija neprestano bježi u svoj svijet mašte.
