«Defenders of Riga» skildrer den utrolige historien om det lille landet Latvias kamp for frihet. Vi følger den unge mannen Martins som under første verdenskrig velger å anmelde seg til militærtjeneste for å bekjempe okkupasjonsmakten Tyskland. Martins blir tvunget til å utsette sitt bryllup med vakte Elza for å kaste seg in i den væpnede kampen. Elza lover å vente på han, men da verdenskrigen er over må det lille landet fortsette å kjempe for selvstendighet. I etterdønningene fra krigen står nemlig både Sovjetunionen og Tyskland klare til å okkupere landet. Martins må enda en gang ofre sitt privatliv når han anslutter seg til motstandergruppen som desperat kjemper for Latvias frihet.
