《毒心術》改編自 1946 年 William Lindsay Gresham 撰寫的同名小說，講述一個在馬戲團幹苦差的人，掌握了替人解開心結的讀心騙術，但充滿罪孽的過去不斷纏繞著他，讓他逐步墮落。故事過去曾被荷里活片廠老將 Edmund Goulding 拍成黑色電影《玉面情魔》，但當年風評不如理想，作品要到後來才獲影評人重新肯定。導演 Del Toro 這次將故事重新搬上大銀幕，相信是看準原著的絕望色彩，以及頹喪的人性面貌，與今天懷疑道德的時代，有著相當相似的部分。
