John Baggs Jr. slouží věrně dlouhá léta u amerického námořnictva. Jeho loď zrovna zakotvila v Seattlu a během rutinní lékařské prohlídky vyjde najevo, že má pilonidální cystu. Bez potvrzení o zdravotní způsobilosti nemůže zpátky na moře, a proto musí přechodně zůstat na námořní základně. Během léčby dostává obvyklou propustku, která trvá do půlnoci. Osaměle se toulá ulicemi přístavního města a v jednom zapadlém baru se seznámí s krásnou Maggie, která si tam na živobytí přivydělává drobnými podvody a prostitucí. Milostné vzplanutí na jednu noc však nečekaně přerůstá ve vztah dvou samotářů, kteří nevěřili, že se ještě někdy dokáží zamilovat. John dokonce pomáhá Maggie s výchovou jejího nemanželského pubertálního syna Douga. Kvůli administrativnímu pochybení se však John ocitá bez finanční podpory od námořnictva a navíc zjistí, že Maggie čeká dítě s jiným mužem. Zdá se, že naděje na společný život byla jen pouhou iluzí.

U.S. Marine Sergeant O'Hara has his hands full training raw recruits, one of whom, 'Skeets' Burns, is a particular thorn in his side. If Burns's lackadaisical approach to the military were not bad enough, he also makes advances on nurse Nora Dale, whom Sergeant O'Hara secretly loves. To Black Dog the Pirate, It is true, there is an Underwater City of Gold. I have seen the ancient map which will lead you straight into the city. It is also the home of King Trident's sceptre which is used to turn the water into air but you, Black Dog, could use the trident to turn water into gold! I found this map in one of the many boxes in Harold's Hock Shop. The silly fool doesn't know an expensive item when he sees it. He was going to sell it to me for only ten gold pieces. Anyway, I had the map in my grasp when that rotten scallywag Galifray took it right from under my nose. Somehow the scoundrel managed to trade it for a dragon bracelet. Harold also threw in a magic genie lamp for good luck! I don't know how Galifray does it but he sure has the gift of the gab. I have managed to persuade Galifray to trade the map for the measly sum of a thousand gold pieces. We will meet you on Black Dragon Isle at the usual time. Your trusty shipmate, Sharky
