바그다드의 왕자였던 아매드는 신하였던 자파의 음모에 의해 왕좌를 빼앗기고 감옥에 갇혀 곧 처형될 위기에 쳐하게 되지만 같이 수감된 도적 아부에 의해 극적으로 탈출하여 바스라 왕국으로 가게 된다. 그곳에서 아매드는 첫눈에 반한 바스라 왕국의 공주에게 빠지게 되지만 그녀에게 청혼을 하였던 자파의 마법에 의해 눈까지 멀게 되고 그를 따르던 아부는 개로 변신을 하게 된다. 그 이후 맹인과 그를 따르는 개로 동냥을 하며 지내게 되지만 공주의 사랑을 원했던 자파는 공주를 안게 될 때 까지 그 저주를 풀지 않겠노라고 한다. 그 사실을 안 공주는 스스로 자파의 품에 안겨 왕자의 눈을 뜨게 하고 아부는 개의 모습에서 다시 사람으로 돌아 오지만 공주를 구하기 위해 자파의 배로 가던 중 자파의 마법에 의해 난파되어 섬에 표류한다. 이곳에서 아부는 알라딘의 램프를 손에 얻고 결국 날으는 양탄자를 타고 왕자와 공주를 자파로부터 구출을 한다.
