Peachy og Daniel gør tjeneste som engelske officerer i Indien, der er en del af det britiske imperium. De to soldater har gang i en række mere eller mindre lyssky foretagender for at forsøde livet med ekstra penge. Helt galt går det på en ekspedition til Afghanistan, hvor Daniel bilder de lokale ind, at han er en reinkarnation af Alexander den store.

Overklasse briten Adela tager i 1920'erne til Chandrapore for at opleve det ægte Indien. Her møder hun den indfødte Dr. Aziz, og de to bliver venner. Det er dog slut med venskabet da Adela anklger ham for voldtægt efter en udflugt. Selvom beviserne er utilstrækkelige, bliver Aziz' liv aldrig det samme igen.

I kolonitidens Indien betaler de indiske bønder skat til de britiske koloniherrer. Et år bliver skatten fordoblet, samtidig med at tørken sætter ind, og de fattige bønder har ingen mulighed for at betale skatten og samtidig overleve. De indgår nu en handel med den britiske kommandant. Der skal spilles en cricketkamp mellem briter og indere. Vinder briterne tredobles skatten. Vinder inderne fritages hele provinsen for skat i tre år. Problemet er bare, at de indiske bønder aldrig har prøvet at spille cricket før.

In the Northwest Frontier of India, the 41st Bengal Lancers leaded by the harsh Colonel Tom Stone are having trouble with the rebellious leader Mohammed Khan. After two casualties, the experienced but insubordinate Lieutenant Alan McGregor receives as replacement, the arrogant Lieutenant Forsythe and the immature son of Colonel Stone, Lieutenant Donald Stone. With the intention to prove that he will not have any privilege in the troop, the reception of Colonel Stone to his son is absolutely cold, but he becomes the protégé of McGregor. When Lieutenant Stone is kidnapped by Mohammed Khan, McGregor and Forsythe disobey the direct order of their commander, disguise as Indian peddlers and go to Khan's fortress to attempt to rescue their friend.

The film explores the tragic fall of feudalism in Bengal during the British Raj. The title of the movie and the story is a reference to the plot simultaneously exploring a platonic relationship between a beautiful, forlorn wife of an aristocrat and a career-driven clerk.

The film encompasses some of a lifetime span of the legend - "The Father of the Indian Unrest". Inspired by the ideologies of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Makarand, a journalist, tries to incorporate his values in the changing political scenario in India.
