Il film inizia con un direttore d'orchestra (Pierre Morhange) che si ritrova davanti alla porta di casa un vecchio amico d'infanzia, Pepinot. Questi gli mostra un libro: sono gli appunti di Clement Mathieu, sorvegliante del collegio "Fond de l'Etang" scritti mentre lui lavorava nel collegio, dove i due amici avevano studiato.

Clement Mathieu compositore e insegnante di musica, ha accettato l'impiego da sorvegliante nel collegio per bambini difficili, perché era disoccupato. Viene accolto dal Direttore Rachin che gli parla dei ragazzi che frequentano e del loro comportamento, gli presenta la sua regola (azione-reazione). Rachin avvisa Mathieu di stare attento e di non dargli alcuna giustificazione, affermando che i ragazzi capiscono solo se puniti, ma Mathieu crede che sia possibile attuare un sistema più conciliante, per educarli, instaurando con loro un dialogo e maggior comprensione per le loro vicende personali.
