En 1902, Clive Candy, un jeune officier britannique, se rend à Berlin pour répliquer à des rumeurs calomnieuses lancées contre l’armée anglaise et se trouve forcé de participer à un duel. Blessé, il se lie d’amitié avec son rival allemand. Ce dernier tombe amoureux d’une amie de Candy et très vite se fiance avec elle. Mais Candy, en retournant à Londres, se rend compte qu’il aime cette femme lui aussi…

Le film raconte la jeunesse du futur Premier Ministre britannique Winston Churchill. La première partie du film montre Churchill alors qu'il fréquentait l'école, une période de sa vie où il fut malheureux ; l'épisode se termine avec la mort de son père. La seconde partie évoque l'époque où il était officier de cavalerie en Inde et au Soudan, et sa participation à la charge de cavalerie à Omdurman, puis ses expériences comme correspondant de guerre dans la seconde guerre des Boer, et les épisodes de sa capture et de son évasion, enfin son élection au Parlement à l'âge de 26 ans.
