Der 16. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika, Abraham Lincoln führt 1861 bis 1865 die Nordstaaten in den Bürgerkrieg gegen die Südstaaten. Als der Sezessionskrieg dem Ende entgegen geht, legt sich der Präsident mit Abgeordneten seines eigenen Kabinetts an. In den Diskussionen geht es um die Beilegung der kämpferischen Konflikte und das Ende des Krieges, die Vereinigung des Landes und vor allem um die Herzensangelegenheit von Lincoln, die Abschaffung der Sklaverei, die er unbedingt durchsetzen möchte.

Der Film erzählt die erste Hälfte des Buches Genesis. Es beginnt mit der Schöpfungsgeschichte und der Vertreibung Adams und Evas aus dem Garten Eden. Kain erschlägt seinen Bruder Abel. Die Arche Noah bewahrt Noah vor der Sintflut. Abraham zieht nach Kanaan, wo der gläubige Mann beinahe seinen Sohn Isaak opfern muss.

By God's order, Abraham was commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac on the mountain of Moriah. While traveling to the place of the sacrifice, alongside Isaac and two servants, Abraham is flooded with vivid memories from the years he and Sarah spent longing for the son they were promised—the son he must now lay upon the altar.

The trials, tribulations, tests, and triumphs of Abraham, his wife Sarah, and his nephew Lot as they leave the land of Ur and head to the land God promised to Abraham. During that journey, through God's faithfulness and grace, Abraham's faith is irrevocably established for all time and he becomes known as "God's Friend".
