Σε αποστολή του στον κόλπο της Συρίας, το γαλλικό υποβρύχιο Τιτάν έρχεται αντιμέτωπο με άγνωστης προέλευσης υποβρύχιο. Η επιστροφή του προσωπικού στη στεριά ικανοποιεί τους περισσότερους όμως τα ανώτερα κλιμάκια διατηρούν επιφυλακτική στάση απέναντί τους και στα γεγονότα που συνέβησαν. Όταν ο τεχνικός σόναρ ανακαλύψει την αλήθεια που κρύβεται πίσω από το μυστηριώδες υποβρύχιο μία νέα αποστολή θα έχει τεθεί ήδη σε εξέλιξη.

Σ’ αυτό έχει βοηθήσει και η πανέμορφη Αντελίν, που προέβλεψε ότι τον περιμένει ένα λαμπρό μέλλον στον βασιλικό στρατό και ότι η ίδια η κόρη του βασιλιά Λουδοβίκου του15ου τον περιμένει.

As soon as they arrive at the barracks, the new contingent reveals some characters who will give their officers a hard time. There is the handsome, resourceful man, the technocrat in love, the bootlicker, the "Jamaican" who only moves to music, the shortsighted man... and all the others. Sometimes to see the nurse undress, sometimes to arrange an appointment with a fiancée, sometimes to cuckold the obtuse non-commissioned officer whose wife is volcanic, sometimes to have a free lunch in a great restaurant, the handsome man invariably deploys a wealth of cunning. And each time it is the colonel's servile driver who gets caught instead of him.
The movie depicts the events from July until September of 1914 which led to the defeat of the German troops at the Marne. While Sebastian Haffner explains and comments on operations and decisions on the basis of situation maps, key scenes are depicted by actors. A main focus is thereby placed by Haffner onto the controversial mission of lieutenant-colonel Richard Hentsch who is said to have, during a war patrol to the various army high commands, contributed to the abortion of the operations significantly.
