Kalbėdami apie karo filmus, kritikai visuomet pamini Lewiso Milestono šedevrą sukurtą dar 1930-aisiais metais. Tuomet gimė geriausia Eriko Marijos Remarko romano „Vakarų fronte nieko naujo“ ekranizacija, iki šiol laikoma viena geriausių karo dramų. Jauno idealisto Polio Boimerio trumpo gyvenimo istorija tapo aistringu kaltinimu militaristinei politikai ir tobulai įkūnijo Pirmojo pasaulinio karo apkasuose pražudytos „prarastosios kartos“ atminimą. Organizuodami filmavimus kino studijos „Universal“ vadovai negailėjo lėšų nei karo scenoms, nei moderniausioms tų laikų technologijoms. Šiais laikais šis senas, bet nepasenęs Lewiso Milestono filmas laikomas karinės dramos etalonu. Filmas apdovanotas dviem pagrindiniais tų metų Oskarais: už geriausią metų filmą ir režisūrą.
