På 1600-talet reser två jesuitiska präster till Japan där katolicismen förbjudits och så gott som alla utländska kontakter har avbrutits. De bevittnar förföljelsen av de kristna japanerna och regeringen som vill rensa bort allt västerländskt inflytande. De får själva utstå våld och förföljelse medan de reser runt för att hitta sin mentor och sprida kristendomen.
