Renton Thurston je 14letý chlapec, který žije se svým dědečkem od doby, kdy jeho otec hrdinsky zahynul a jeho sestra odešla neznámo kam. Je to velký fanoušek Traparu (sport, kde se surfuje na částicových vlnách) a především jedné skupiny zvané Gekkostate a jejich velitele Hollanda. Rentonovým snem je připojit se k této skupině a pilotovat mechy zvané LFO. Jednoho dne u jejich domova přistane dívka Eureka s původním LFO zvané Nirvash type ZERO, čímž přiláká pozornost armády. Po zničení jeho domova je Renton donucen doručit do Nirvashe poslední součástku Amita Drive a tím se dostává do skupiny Gekkostate. Brzy si však uvědomí, že realita není tak růžová, jak myslel.
