Die Afroamerikanerin Kenya McQueen ist beruflich sehr erfolgreich, jedoch bleibt ihr für die Liebe keine Zeit. Kenya stammt aus einer angesehenen Familie und hat daher entsprechende Ansprüche an einen Mann. Sie lässt sich widerwillig auf ein Blind-Date ein, das von einer Arbeitskollegin für sie arrangiert wurde. Hier trifft sie auf den weissen Landschaftsarchitekten Brian, der ihren Vorstellungen vom "Perfekten schwarzen Mann" überhaupt nicht entspricht und versucht das Date so schnell wie möglich zu beenden. Bei der Hochzeit ihrer Arbeitskollegin trifft sie wieder auf Brian der ihr anbietet ihren Garten zu gestalten. Schon bald funkt es zwischen den beiden gewaltig. Die ständigen Disskussionen um Unterschiede zwischen Weiss und Schwarz werden doch bald zur Belastung für die beiden und es endet in einem Streit, der zur Trennung führt. Da trifft sie auf den erfolgreichen schwarzen Anwalt Mark, der auch dem Wunsch ihrer Eltern entspricht. Doch kann sie mit ihm auch glücklich werden?
