Οι άνθρωποι δεν άργησαν να ανακαλύψουν το πόση ευμάρεια θα μπορούσε να προσφέρει αυτός ο κόσμος-μινιατούρα, και με την υπόσχεση μιας καλύτερης ζωής, ο καθημερινός άνθρωπος Paul Safranek και η σύζυγός του Audrey, αποφασίζουν να εγκαταλείψουν την αγχωμένη ζωή τους στην Όμαχα για να μικρύνουν και να ζήσουν στη μικροσκοπική κοινότητα - μια επιλογή ζωής που οδηγεί σε πολλές απρόσμενες περιπέτειες.

Κρατούμενοι-πειραματόζωα στέλνονται στο παρελθόν με σκοπό να μαζέψουν πληροφορίες για το ξέσπασμα της επιδημίας αλλά η μοίρα τους είναι άγνωστη. Ο Τζέιμς, κρατούμενος που βασανίζεται από ένα περίεργο όνειρο/μνήμη της παιδικής του ηλικίας, επιλέγεται να ταξιδέψει στο 1996 αλλά κατά λάθος καταλήγει στο 1990, όπου φυσικά αντιμετωπίζεται ως ψυχοπαθής και οδηγείται στο φρενοκομείο. Εκεί θα γνωρίσει τα άτομα που πιθανόν να αλλάξουν το μέλλον του κόσμου, την ψυχίατρο Κάθριν και το θεότρελο Τζέφρι.
Γνωστός αλλά και αγαπητός στο περιβάλλον του ως μεγάλος μυθοπλάστης, ο Έντουαρντ Μπλουμ, αν και βρίσκεται στη δύση της ζωής του, επιμένει να αφηγείται φανταστικές ιστορίες. Ο απόμακρος όμως γιος του, ο Γουίλ, δεν μπορεί να διακρίνει το αληθινό βίωμα από τον μύθο και προσπαθεί, λίγο πριν από το τέλος, να βρει την αλήθεια πίσω από τις αφηγήσεις του.
