His wife is angry at him, and begins having an affair with the man who takes the birds to the market. Lakhinder's partner's daughter understands his relationship to the birds. They come to visit him in his lonely hut.

Ty jsou zde vylíčeny jako svět dospělých, kde vládne lež, pokrytectví a zrada. Andreuův otec je jedním z hlavních podezřelých z vraždy, což do chlapcova života vnese převratné změny. Ty ho mimo jiné donutí rychle dospět a zaujmout stanovisko k chování dospělých, s nímž většinou nesouhlasí. Kvůli tomu se nejen zřekne vlastních kořenů, ale nakonec odhaluje i temnou stránku vlastní duše. Režisér Agustí Villaronga se proslavil především velmi ponurými a drsnými příběhy, které diváky občas přenesou za hranici hororu. Také v Tmavém chlebu vytváří tíživou, dusnou atmosféru, která má daleko k obvyklým sladkobolným reflexím dějin očima dětí
