En « l'an de grâce » 1482, Gringoire, troubadour, entreprend de raconter l'histoire dont il a été témoin. Les bohémiens, guidé par Clopin, arrivent dans Paris et comptent s'y installer quelque temps. Mais cela ne plaît pas à Frollo, archevêque de la cathédrale Notre-Dame. Utilisant le pouvoir de l'église, il convainc Phœbus, un jeune chevalier chef des archers du roi, de les expulser... Spectacle enregistré au Palais des Congrès de Paris les 16 et 17 janvier 1999.

La cruelle Princesse Turandot offre sa main au prince qui saura résoudre trois énigmes, les concourants défaits étant livrés au bourreau et mis à mort. Malgré le nombre immense de princes ayant perdu la vie dans ce concours, le Prince Calaf, fou amoureux de la Princesse, décide de tenter sa chance.

Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili gives a dynamic performance as Bizet’s iconic gypsy, the woman who lives by her own rules. Aleksandrs Antonenko is Don José, the soldier who falls under her spell, and Ildar Abdrazakov plays Escamillo, the swaggering bullfighter who takes Carmen away from Don José—an action that seals Carmen’s tragic fate. Anita Hartig is Micaëla, and Pablo Heras-Casado conducts Richard Eyre’s hit production, set in 1930s Spain.

Le grand retour de "Jesus Christ Superstar", célèbre opéra-rock créé dans les années 1970, dans une nouvelle production en 2019, avec dans le rôle de Jésus le chanteur de soul John Legend, dans celui du roi Hérode le rockeur Alice Cooper, et dans celui de Judas, l'acteur et chanteur Brandon Victor.

Both Florez and Diana Damrau brought their bel canto expertise and superb vocalism to the service of Verdi's music. The Rigoletto, Zeljko Lucic, ran the gamut from tenderness with his Gilda to thundering fury with everyone else. I also liked the production. At first, when Rigoletto was putting on his grease paint during the overture, I was afraid that it might be a typical "Euro-trash" production, with a bit of warmed over I Pagliacci. But the sets and dramatic action really served the music and libretto. I would have to say that I came to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the story and characters as a result of seeing this performance.

La star montante du Met, Angela Meade, est Elvira, la jeune femme prise entre trois hommes : son amant, le noble devenu hors-la-loi Ernani (Marcello Giordani) ; son tuteur, le riche et âgé de Silva, qui la veut pour lui (Ferruccio Furlanetto) ; et Don Carlo, le roi d'Espagne, qui désire également Elvira (Dmitri Hvorostovsky). Les premiers drames de Verdi regorgent de mélodies entraînantes et de rythmes entraînants, interprétés magistralement par le Met Orchestra et le Chœur dirigés par Marco Armiliato.

La nouvelle mise en scène audacieuse de Sir David McVicar de Tosca, le thriller lyrique de Puccini sur la Rome napoléonienne, a enthousiasmé le public du Met en 2018. Dans cette retransmission en live HD, la soprano bulgare Sonya Yoncheva incarne la diva éponyme passionnée, face au ténor charismatique Vittorio Grigolo dans le rôle de son amant, le peintre idéaliste Mario Cavaradossi. Le baryton Željko Lučić incarne le menaçant baron Scarpia, le chef de la police qui emploie des tactiques brutales pour piéger à la fois les criminels et ses conquêtes sexuelles. Sur le podium, Emmanuel Villaume dirige la partition électrisante, qui présente certaines des mélodies les plus mémorables de Puccini.

Princess Fedora, who is to marry the Count the following day, arrives and sings of her love for him, unaware that the dissolute Count has betrayed her with another woman. The sound of sleigh-bells is heard, and the Count is brought in mortally wounded. Doctors and a priest are summoned, and the servants are questioned. It is proposed that Count Loris Ipanov, a suspected Nihilist sympathiser, was probably the assassin. De Siriex (a diplomat), and Grech (a police inspector) plan an investigation. Fedora swears on the jewelled Byzantine cross she is wearing that Count Andrejevich's death will be avenged.

Absent from the Met stage since 1917, Borodin’s masterwork about an introspective prince’s military campaign against the invading Polovtsians returned in 2014 with a first-rate cast and an astonishing production by Dmitri Tcherniakov. Well worth the wait, the sets feature visually striking projections interlaced with lush flowering fields, and the first act delivers one of opera’s most exciting dance medleys, a portion of which went mainstream in the 1950s when Tony Bennett recorded “Stranger in Paradise.”

It is a rare opera indeed that calls for one soprano diva and no fewer than six tenors. Mary Zimmerman’s fanciful production of Rossini’s drama, designed by Richard Hudson and with choreography by Graciela Daniele, provides the perfect setting for superstar Renée Fleming’s captivating performance of the title role. A beautiful but evil sorceress in the times of the Crusades, Armida sets out to regain the love of the Frankish knight Rinaldo (Lawrence Brownlee) by putting her magical spells on him. She at first succeeds to draw him into her web of sorcery, but ultimately divine intervention—and his fellow soldiers—free Rinaldo from his enchantment—much to the vengeful fury of Armida and her demons.

A Victor Hugo play, haunting and scandalous, provided the inspiration for Verdi’s mid-career masterpiece. A vengeful but misguided court jester strives to save his daughter from a duke’s licentious clutches, but can't part with the feeling that a curse looms over all of his actions. In Rigoletto, the composer introduces several of his most iconic arias and duets—as well as an 11th-hour quartet that counts among the finest moments in opera.

Notre Dame de Paris tells the story of Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer of the cathedral of Notre-Dame and of his impossible and tragic love for Esmeralda, a beautiful gypsy. A love condemned by injustice and hypocrisy. Quasimodo forced by his ugliness to look at the world from the top of a tower one day he falls madly in love with Esmeralda who sees dancing and singing on the square in front of the cathedral. But Esmeralda is in love with Febo, the handsome captain of the King's guards. Febo is fiancé of Fiordaliso, a young and rich bourgeois, but the exotic and sensual beauty of the gypsy does not leave indifferent the man who immediately falls in love with her. Even Frollo, the archdeacon of the cathedral, is attracted by the gypsy and spying on the moves of the two lovers in a raptus of jealousy and repressed carnal desire to get rid of the rival stabbing Febo behind.

La production magnifique et évocatrice d'Otto Schenk/Günther Schneider-Siemssen se poursuit avec ce deuxième opéra du cycle Ring de Wagner. Hildegard Behrens apporte une profonde empathie à Brünnhilde, la fille préférée du dieu Wotan (James Morris) qui pourtant le défie. La représentation de Wotan par Morris est à juste titre légendaire, tout comme Christa Ludwig, dans le rôle de Fricka. Jessye Norman et Gary Lakes sont Sieglinde et Siegmund, et Kurt Moll est le menaçant Hunding. James Levine et l'orchestre du Met offrent des couleurs et un drame étonnants.

Very nice set and costumes by Mauro Carosi. The procuction is well staged in the relatively small scene at Parma by Joseph Franconi Lee. Here's a performance that really works.Everything seems just right, but if you MUST have the top soloists (Pavarotti, Domingo...), look elsewhere. However, I think that the ones here (Susanna Branchini (Aida), Mariana Pentcheva (Amneris), Walter Fraccaro (Radames), Alberto Gazale (Amonasro), Carlo Malinverno (Il Re di Egitto) do a fantastic job. Also pluses for the ballet and the video production.

Live from La Scala Saturday 07 July 2007. In this live performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Violetta, a courtesan much wooed by Parisian society, organises a grand party that is attended, amongst others, by the young Alfredo Germont. He confesses his feelings to Violetta, who is already suffering from consumption. She vacillates between genuine affection and a realistic assessment of her situation as a "fallen woman", which precludes any lasting relationship with a man.
