La prima confruntare cu muzica lui Amadeus, Salieri o consideră divină, își dorește și el să compună așa ceva, ca să poată aduce laudă lui Dumnezeu mai bine și este nerăbdător să-l cunoască pe compozitor. După întâlnire însă, el nu-și poate explica de ce Dumnezeu și-a ales ca instrument un așa om vulgar și ridicol. De aici se nasc invidia și gelozia, care în cele din urmă vor duce la răzbunare.
