John Rabe (1882-1950) è, insieme a Marx ed Engels, il tedesco più noto in Cina. Definito dal "The New York Times "l'Oscar Schindler della Cina" Rabe, direttore della Siemens a Nanchino nel 1937, proprio mentre veniva richiamato a Berlino perché il governo aveva deciso di chiudere la fabbrica, si trovò a difendere la popolazione locale e i suoi operai dalla doppia azione del governo nazista e, soprattutto, dei giapponesi invasori.
