Viskas prasidėjo 2009-aisiais, kuomet vienas interneto puslapio „Something Awful“ kūrėjų patalpino pora nuotraukų, kuriose neaiškiai matėsi aukšto, kostiumuoto, ilgomis rankomis ir tarsi migla aptrauktu veidu vyro figūra. Parašai po nuotraukomis skelbė apie keistus žmonių dingimus ir žūtis bei užsiminė, kad dėl to gali būti kaltas Slendermenas. Puslapio skaitytojai greitai pasigavo šią idėją ir per kelias dienas patys patalpino dar keliasdešimt panašaus pobūdžio nuotraukų. Taip gimė mitas apie antgamtišką būtybę, persekiojančią ir galimai žudančią žmones, ypač vaikus bei paauglius. Mažame Masačiusetso miestelyje keturios paauglės draugės surengia apeigas, kurių tikslas – panaikinti Slendermeno prakeiksmą. Tačiau kuomet netrukus po apeigų viena iš jų dingsta, likusios netrukus įsitikina, kad jokio prakeiksmo jos nepanaikino. Priešingai – atkreipė Slendermeno dėmesį, kuris, pagrobęs jų draugę, dabar medžioja ir jas.
