Efter at en række hidtil usete naturkatastrofer truede planeten, samledes verdens ledere om, at skabe et avanceret netværk af satellitter til, at styre det globale klima og holde alle sikre. Men nu er noget gået galt -systemet som er bygget til at beskytte Jorden, begynder i stedet for at angribe, og det er en kamp mod tiden for at afdække den virkelige trussel, før en verdensomspændende geostorm udsletter alt ... og alle!

Geofysiker Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart, ERin Brockovich) har gjort en frygtelig opdagelse: Jordens kerne er holdt op med at rotere. Planetens magnetfelter er ved at forsvinde, og i løbet af måneder vil jorden blive ødelagt. Der er kun ét håb: At sende Keyes og et hold af fremtrædende videnskabsfolk i et underjordisk fartøj til jordens indre. Globale temperaturstigninger har smeltet polernes indlandsis og der findes ikke længere en tør plet på jorden. Befolkningen lever i maritime samfund i flydende byer konstant truet af omstrejfende pirater på plyndringstogt. Civilisationen flyder uden mål og med, og de overlevende må sætte deres lid til en enkelt mand, kendt under navnet Mariner, der tager kampen op mod piraterne og deres skånselsløse leder.
