Die Witwe Sarah Hargrave und ihre Tochter Lilli reisen im Viktorianischen Zeitalter auf einem Schiff. Auf einem dahin treibenden Ruderboot wird der Waise Paddy (er wird von der Witwe Richard genannt) mit seinen toten Eltern gefunden. Weil auf dem Schiff die Cholera ausbricht, wird die Witwe mit den beiden Kindern und einem Matrosen auf einem Ruderboot ausgesetzt. Nachdem der Matrose die Kinder töten will und in Notwehr von Sarah getötet wird, stranden sie sowie der Waise Richard auf einer Insel. Richard kennt sich sofort aus. Sie entdecken die Hütte seiner Eltern. Dort zieht Sarah ihre Tochter und Richard groß und unterrichtet sie anhand der Bibel.Sarah stirbt, als Lilli und Richard acht Jahre alt sind. Die Kinder werden älter und entdecken die Liebe. Ein Schiff kommt, die Tochter des Kapitäns Sylvia Hilliard will Richard für sich gewinnen. Lilli und Richard bleiben lieber auf der Insel. Sie geben ihrer Tochter den Namen Sarah.

The result is a magic flight in one single shot, along the remains of an internal village road. At the same time a whole year passes by at 50 000 times normal speed! Most of the year, the village of Børfjord lies empty with virgin snow between cold houses. People show up only during a short and hectic summer season. But the cycles of nature go on as they have always done, totally independent of what people might do.
