Nick Naylor (en uhyggeligt overbevisende Aaron Eckhart) er en charmerende debattør. Så god at han elegant tryner anti-rygerne live på prime time TV - selvom de stiller op med en døende, tobaks-kræftsyg teenager. Nick har nemlig valgt at bruge sine verbale trylleevner som talsmand for tobaksindustrien (regningerne skal jo betales, som han selv udtrykker det). Rigtigt/forkert betyder ingenting. Det drejer sig udelukkende om at vinde diskussionen. Men da en veldrejet kvindelig journalist (Katie Holmes) - med endnu mindre moral end Nick selv - fanger ham med bukserne nede, og lader ham smage på lidt af hans egen smagløse medicin, begynder Nick at overveje, om det nu også for enhver pris er værd at få ret..?
Dramaet 'The Farewell' handler om en kinesisk familie, hvoraf den ene del bor i USA, mens den anden lever i Kina. Her bl.a. familiens bedstemor Nai Nai, der bliver diagnosticeret med kræft, hvilket kun giver hende kort tid tilbage at leve i.
Familien i USA rejser derfor tilbage til Kina under påskud af at deltage i et bryllup. I virkeligheden er det dog for at være sammen med Nai Nai i hendes sidste dage. Dog uden at nogen fortæller bedstemoren, at hendes dage er talte.
For barnebarnet Billi, der rejser fra New York til Kina, bliver forsøget med at navigere i løgnen en svær opgave. Med et ben i hver kultur, skal hun nu respektere familiens ønske, med samtidig også være tro over sig selv og hendes elskede bedstemor.

Mohsen's father is going to pass away soon due to an illness, however, Mohsen himself has been missing for 6 months. A BSc medicine student, he has become a drug addict and lost himself in the slums. Setting out to help him out of his conditions, and deliver his mother's care to him, his father starts searching for him. The movie is embedded in the social conditions of the 70s AD Iran, has a 70s Iranian chivalric tincture, religious color-as was the climate of the Iranian society at the time- and is blended with historic state propaganda. For the audience of that time, this movie would have received a fair score, as it touches on religious notions. However, the issue it addresses is far more complicated and sophisticated at this age, and its propaganda outlook can no longer attract significant commercial or critical attention.
