以上個世紀七Ｏ年代為背景，導演麥克米爾斯（Mike Mils）的《二十世紀女性》講述了三名女性陪伴一個男孩成長的故事。原片名 20th Century Women，聽來格局宏大，直接涵蓋了整個群體，但其實電影本身並非那麼難以親近，翻譯成「二十世紀的她們」倒更接近其日常氣息。「她們」範圍縮小、指涉明確，男主角青春時代陪伴在身邊的三位女性：母親、暗戀的好友茱莉（Julie），以及住在樓上的女性主義攝影師艾比（Abbie）。藉由男主角與三人的互動，導演舉重若輕地描繪了七Ｏ年代末的美國生活，龐克、女性主義、花襯衫、卡特總統……。沒有太激烈的衝突或戲劇化的開展，全片節奏舒緩，在一樁樁年少往事裡漸成滋味。而利用多重視角，從不同人的角度分段敘述，同一件事反覆辯證，也讓事件有了不同的樣貌。大量的旁白穿插其間，無論講述他人或自我講述，都賦予單一情節多重意義。
