Rok 1918, První světová válka vrcholí, zapojuje se i Amerika. Německému letectvu, do té doby složenému z příslušníků aristokracie a buržoazie, dochází kvalitní piloti. Proto vrchní velení umožní vstoupit do letectva i příslušníkům nižších vrstev. Jedním z nich je i Bruno Stachel. Od začátku mezi ostatní piloty nezapadl, přesto se snaží dokázat, že je lepší než ostatní. Poté, co se z něj stává letecké eso, velitelství ho propaguje jako národního hrdinu, aby pozvedlo morálku obyčejných vojáků, že i člověk jejich vrstev může být úspěšným důstojníkem.
