Acum 20 000 de ani, Pãmântul era o planetã plinã de amenintãri. Una dintre acestea era începerea Epocii de Gheatã. Pentru a se pune la adãpost de înghet, animalele care populau Pãmântul la acea vreme încep sã migreze spre sud. Exceptie fac un mamut pe nume Manfred, obisnuit sã facã totul în maniera sa personalã si un lenes pe nume Sid, obisnuit sã nu facã niciodatã nimic. Din momentul în care Sid îl autoproclamã pe Manfred „protectorul” sãu, mamutul face tot posibilul pentru a se descotorosi de nedorita povarã. Încercãrile sale dau însã gres si Manny este cooptat de Sid în actiunea de salvare a unui bebelus pe nume Roshan, pentru a-i fi redat familiei sale. Lor li se alãturã Diego, un tigru viclean care vede în bebelus un ospãt delicios.
Cursa epică a lui Scrat după ghinda nărăvașă îl catapultează în univers, unde declanșează accidental o serie de evenimente cosmice care transformă și pun în pericol lumea din Epoca de Gheață. Pentru a se salva, Sid, Manny, Diego și restul turmei trebuie să plece de acasă și să pornească într-o expediție plină de comedie şi aventură, în timp ce călătoresc spre noi ținuturi exotice și se confruntă cu o serie de personaje noi, pline de culoare.

Toate animalele se bucura de revenirea la o viata normala. Astfel, Manny se gandeste ca ar fi timpul sa-si intemeieze o familie, numai ca nimeni n-a mai vazut un alt mamut de foarte multa vreme. Manny ajunge sa creada ca este ultimul mamut in viata, pana cand o intalneste pe Ellie, unica femela mamut de pe pamant. Singura problema este ca cei doi nu se pot suferi unul pe celalalt.
Manny, Sid si Diego descopera ca incalzirea climei si dezghetul care a urmat ridica o problema serioasa: apele dezlantuite ameninta sa inunde intreaga vale.

La fiecare popas li se mai alătură câte un trib care, ca și al lor, fusese atacat de vânătorii de sclavi. Astfel, micul grup al lui D'Leh se transformă treptat într-o adevarată armată. Călătoria lor este presărată cu numeroase pericole, eroii noștri trebuind să înfrunte monștri preistorici și fenomene naturale înfricoșătoare, iar la sfârșitul ei descoperă un tărâm dincolo de orice imaginație.
