Cory Lambert arbeitet für den United States Fish and Wildlife Service und macht vor allem Jagd auf Kojoten und andere Raubtiere im Indianer-Reservat Wind River. Den kürzlichen Tod seiner Teenager-Tochter hat er noch nicht überwunden, da stolpert er in der Wildnis über die Leiche einer vergewaltigten und erfrorenen Jugendlichen. Um den Täter zu fassen, wird die noch sehr junge FBI-Agentin Jane Banner auf den Fall angesetzt. Weil sie sich in dem rauen Gelände und mit den schwierigen Wetterverhältnissen vor Ort allerdings nicht auskennt, bittet sie Cory um Hilfe bei ihren Ermittlungen und gemeinsam brechen sie auf ins Ungewisse.

Doch dann werden zwei Mädchen von einer haarigen Kreatur auf der Nordpiste angegriffen und eins von ihnen getötet. Tony, der die Besucher nicht vergraulen will, erklärt nach einer Sichtung, daß es sich um einen Menschen gehandelt haben muß, doch Sheriff Paraday (Clint Walker) ermittelt trotzdem weiter, denn bei einem Toten bleibt es nicht. Als Tonys alter Freund Ger (Bo Svensson) und dessen Frau Ellen (Yvette Mimieux) in der Lodge eintreffen, sieht Tony eine Gelegenheit, den unerwünschten Angreifer mittels seines arbeitssuchenden und skierfahrenen alten Freundes loszuwerden.
