Karel Zeman a mozi igaz és modern varázslója elkészítette ördögi találmányát, mely 1958-ban a Brüsszeli Nemzetközi Kiállításon és Fesztiválon óriási sikert aratott. A Verne-regényből készült "Ördögi találmány" c. filmjében már a rajz-, báb-, játék- és kisfilmek technikai módszerei harmonikus egységbe olvadnak. Együtt szerepelnek a filmen élő színészek és gumiból készült tengeri szörnyek a rajzolt díszletek és a Verne-regények első kiadásait díszítő acélmetszetek között. Annak ellenére, hogy a film a kis gottwaldovi stúdióban készült, a legkezdetlegesebb eszközökkel, a filmet a rendkívül magas technikai tudás jellemzi. Ha Zeman ezután a filmje után semmit sem alkotott volna, már ez is elegendő lett volna, ahhoz, hogy beírja nevét az egyetemes filmtörténetbe.
