Der Archäologe Dr.Henry Jones wird, nachdem er von seinem französischen Kollegen Belloq nach einer Bergung aus einem Aztekengrab hereingelegt wurde, von Regierungsagenten auf die Bundeslade angesetzt, das Behältnis in dem Moses' Gesetzestafeln aufbewahrt wurden.Laut Geheiminformationen suchen die Nazis nach der Lade, da sie den Besitzer unbesiegbar machen soll. Jones, genannt Indiana Jones, reist daraufhin nach Nepal, wo er einen alten Kollegen aufspüren will, jedoch nur dessen Tochter findet, die sich an ihn ranhängt. Ein altes Schmuckstück führt sie nach Ägypten, wo die Nazis mit Belloqs Hilfe bereits Ausgrabungen vornehmen. So kommt es zum Wettlauf um die Auffindung der Quelle der Seelen, wo die Lade stehen soll. Doch auch nachdem die Lade aus der schlangenverseuchten Quelle geborgen ist, ist das Spiel noch lange nicht vorbei....

While portraying the events of the Prophet's path, her time, Ma'mun's conspiracies and efforts for her martyrdom, the work tries to express a mystical narrative of the character of Hazrat Masoumeh. It deals with the story of this journey, and includes passages about the political and social atmosphere of the time, where the general atmosphere of the storytelling is somewhat close to the documentary.

"An Ensign to the Nations" was made by the LDS Church's Audiovisual Department, with Russ Holt as the producer. With so much attention paid to the early history of the church during its sesquicentennial year, Holt said the movie depicts church history from 1847 to 1997. It makes clear that the pioneer trek wasn't the end - but rather the beginning - of an epic story that continues to grow larger with each passing year.
