La nau de transport comercial USCSS Nostromo torna de Thedus a la Terra amb una tripulació de set membres en somni criogènic quan, en rebre una transmissió d'origen desconegut provinent d'un planetoide proper, l'ordinador central de la nau, "Mare", els desperta. Degut a un mal aterratge la nau sofreix desperfectes i alguns membres de la tripulació es disposen a explorar l'origen de la senyal que resulta ser una antiga nau amb restes fossilitzades d'un gran alienígena assegut en la cadira del pilot. Un darrere l'altre, els tripulants seran víctimes d'una terrible bèstia que ha pujat a bord.

L'any 1957 la guerra freda s'expandeix a l'espai. La Unió Soviètica envia l'Sputnik com el primer objecte artificial a l'òrbita terrestre. 3 anys més tard Yuri Gagarin surt a l'espai com el primer ésser humà. L'anomenada "carrera espacial" sembla decidir-se. Però el 1961 el president Kennedy va prometre enviar astronautes americans a la Lluna. Va néixer el Projecte Apollo. Es va construir una nau espacial prou potent com per escapar de la gravitació terrestre, aterrar a la Lluna i portar la tripulació de forma segura a la Terra. El dissenyador d'animacions Christian Stangl, va treballar amb el seu germà i compositor Wolfgang Stangl durant 18 mesos en aquest curtmetratge. La base van ser milers de fotografies originals de la NASA, preses pels astronautes durant les missions Apollo, que es van publicar el setembre del 2015. És un collage animat que utilitza diferents tècniques per a donar vida als fotogrames.
