Chihiro og hendes forældre er på vej til deres nye hjem, men da hendes far forsøger med en genvej havner familien på en øde, mudret landevej. Som i et drømmesyn når de frem til en forladt forlystelsespark og en restaurant fyldt med mad, men uden gæster og personale. Mens forældrene kaster sig over maden, fornemmer Chihiro en fare og som mørket falder på oplever hun til sin skræk, at området er fyldt med ånder og hendes forældre forheksede. Snart får hun hjælp af den mystiske dreng Haku i et overdådigt eventyr fyldt med spænding, sjov og uhygge
Den unge pige Momo fra Tokyo flytter til en afsides ø sammen med sin mor. Med sig har hun et ufærdigt brev, hendes afdøde far begyndte at skrive, men aldrig nåede at færdiggøre. På øen Shio begynder Momo at udforske sit nye hjem. Hun møder andre børn, og forsøger at lære de nye omgivelser at kende. Men det varer ikke længe før der begynder at ske mærkelige ting omkring hende. Små ting begynder at forsvinde, og Momo hører en underlig rumlen fra loftet før moren tager på arbejde om morgenen. Moren tror ikke på Momo, men lydene viser sig imidlertid at komme fra en umage gruppe bestående af tre åndelige væsener. Sammen med væsenerne forsøger Momo at finde forbindelsen til farens ufærdige brev.
1955. Kitaro's father, Medama Oyaji, comes to Yagura Village in search of his missing wife. The village was ruled by the Ryuga clan, which controls Japan's political and business circles behind the scenes. Mizuki, who works at a blood bank, visits the village with a secret mission to mourn the death of the head of his family, and meets Kitaro's father. While an ugly fight unfolds over the succession of the head of the family, a member of the family is brutally murdered at the village shrine. It was the beginning of a terrifying chain of events.
