Femårige Saroo bliver efterladt alene på toget - og havner tusindvis af kilometer hjemmefra i kaotiske Kolkata. Saroo kan ikke finde hjem, men ender på et børnehjem. Siden bliver han bortadopteret til et australsk par, hos hvem han finder tryghed og kærlighed. 25 år senere beslutter Saroo sig for at finde hjem til sin indiske familie.
