Um estúdio cinematográfico será fechado. Genya Tachibana, uma reporter de televisão, localizou a sua mais famosa estrela, Chiyoko Fujiwara, que vive reclusa desde que deixou de atuar há mais de 30 anos. A repórter entrega uma chave à ela, o que a faz refletir sobre a sua carreira: enquanto ela conta a sua trajetória, Genya e seu sofredor cameraman mergulham numa fascinante história.

A história ocorre em 1860 e baseia-se na chegada de um ronin a uma cidade que sofre com a guerra entre duas gangues. Kuwabatake Sanjuro, que significa "Amoreira de 30 Anos" (Toshirō Mifune), aproveitando a sua perspicácia tenta ganhar dinheiro e, ao mesmo tempo, livrar a cidade das gangues rivais, ora associando-se a um grupo, ora associando-se a outro, tirando proveito da situação e manipulando-os, devido ao despreparo estratégico dos dois grupos, que é demonstrado através de diversas cenas satíricas durante o filme.

Durante o Japão medieval, um importante lorde falece em meio à uma decisiva guerra. Prevendo que isso pudesse acontecer, ele deixa uma ordem de que, se realmente falecesse, alguém deveria se passar por ele e, assim, evitar a queda de seu reinado. Nesse momento entra na história um pobre ladrão, sósia do grande lorde, que encontra uma situação incrivelmente mais difícil do que qualquer um poderia imaginar.

A humble and simple Takezo abandons his life as a knight errant. He's sought as a teacher and vassal by Shogun, Japan's most powerful clan leader. He's also challenged to fight by the supremely confident and skillful Sasaki Kojiro. Takezo agrees to fight Kojiro in a year's time but rejects Shogun's patronage, choosing instead to live on the edge of a village, raising vegetables. He's followed there by Otsu and later by Akemi, both in love with him. The year ends as Takezo assists the villagers against a band of brigands. He seeks Otsu's forgiveness and accepts her love, then sets off across the water to Ganryu Island for his final contest.

Ao lado do amigo Matahachi, o jovem órfão Takezo deixa seu vilarejo para se juntar ao exército e enfrentar uma batalha. Vendo-se perdedores, os dois procuram abrigo numa casa isolada onde vive a viúva Oko e sua filha Akemi. Oko acaba seduzindo Matahachi, que cai na tentação da mulher e se esquece de seu noivado com Otsu. Logo Oko, Matahachi e Akemi partem para viver em outro local, enquanto Takezo resolve voltar ao seu vilarejo. Lá ele narra os acontecimentos à família de Matahachi, que além de não aceitar os fatos ainda condena o jovem Takezo por traição. Ele será salvo da morte por um monge que irá ensinar ao rapaz o código dos samurais. O destino acaba colocando Otsu e Takezo no mesmo caminho. Apaixonada, ela promete a ele que irá esperar seu retorno como um cavaleiro errante.

A talented but troubled Edo Period swordsman, Kanemi Sanzaemon. Three years earlier, Kanemi killed a woman, Renko, the corrupt mistress of the powerful daimyo Tabu Ukyou. Unexpectedly, Kanemi received a lenient sentence for his crime and is allowed to return to his clan after only one year of imprisonment. Following his return, Kanemi is faced with the death of his wife, Mutsue. Thereafter, Kanemi lives with and cares for his wife's niece, Satoo, who has secret affections for Kanemi and expresses them by helping change his bleak outlook on life. Meanwhile, Kanemi's develops his unique "bird-catching" sword technique which he will soon put to test in battle for the first time against the fearsome swordsman, Hayatonosho Obiya.

Japan, 1860. The men of the Mito clan, victims of the Ansei purge, anxiously prowl around the Sakurada Gate of Edo Castle with the intention of assassinating Naosuke Ii of Hikone, tairō of the Tokugawa shogunate and responsible for their misfortune.

A shogun's eldest son must do whatever it takes to survive a series of attempts on his life. He receives much-needed aid from seven warriors who are led by a strong leader.

With Gaoh having stolen the DenLiner and trapping the Imagins onboard, Ryotaro and Hana find themselves trapped in the year 2000 where they meet Ryotaro’s younger self, but Ryotaro is slowly forgetting everything having to do with Den-O! As Gaoh gets closer to his target, the only hope lies with Yuuto’s complex plans and a little bit of luck, or else time itself could fall victim to Gaoh’s evil desires!

After years on the road establishing his reputation as Japan's greatest fencer, Takezo returns to Kyoto. Otsu waits for him, yet he has come not for her but to challenge the leader of the region's finest school of fencing. To prove his valor and skill, he walks deliberately into ambushes set up by the school's followers. While Otsu waits, Akemi also seeks him, expressing her desires directly. Meanwhile, Takezo is observed by Sasaki Kojiro, a brilliant young fighter, confident he can dethrone Takezo. After leaving Kyoto in triumph, Takezo declares his love for Otsu, but in a way that dishonors her and shames him. Once again, he leaves alone.

Leading an expedition in Germany, Kougami unseals the resting place of one of the alchemists that created the Core Medals in an effort to retrieve a set of lost Medals. However, upon the seal being undone, millions of Cell Medals erupt into a tower while creating a magical barrier that causes parts of Japan to flip over. As the alchemist reveals her plans to become a new OOO, Eiji and his friends are thrown into the past and must find their way back home and stop the alchemist before she destroys the world!

Against the backdrop of the Edo treasury devaluing currency and driving many into poverty, Hanzo Itami enforces the law without regard to status. He shows inadequate respect to the treasurer, who wants him dead.

The film depicts carnivalesque atmosphere summed up by the cry "Ei ja nai ka" ("Why not?") in Japan in 1867 and 1868 in the days leading to the Meiji Restoration. It examines the effects of the political and social upheaval of the time, and culminates in a revelrous march on the Tokyo Imperial Palace, which turns into a massacre. Characteristically, Imamura focuses not on the leaders of the country, but on characters in the lower classes and on the fringes of society.

Yataro Tanigawa, a one-eyed hired assassin, impresses yakuza boss Gomyo Kiyoemon with his skill. Gomyo hires Tanigawa as his bodyguard, or yojimbo, to protect him during an inter-clan conflict. Tanigawa quickly rises in stature in the clan, but finds his boss's enemies almost overwhelming.
