Dicembre 2004. Henry, Maria e i loro tre figli decidono di concedersi una vacanza natalizia lasciando il Giappone , dove lui lavora, per raggiungere la Thailandia. Anche se Henry ha qualche preoccupazione relativa al suo impiego il relax è totale. Fino a quando, la mattina del 26, uno tsunami di enormi proporzioni travolge tutto ciò che si trova di fronte. Maria viene trascinata via nella stessa direzione del figlio maggiore Lucas, mentre Henry viene travolto con stretti a sé i due figli più piccoli.
