La storia è quella di Robin di Locksley nobile ed abile arciere al servizio di Re Riccardo Cuor di Leone durante la guerra di Francia. Interessato solo alla gloria e a "salvarsi la pelle", Locksley cambia prospettive dopo la morte del sovrano: tornando a casa, in Inghilterra, scopre in che condizioni versa la contea di Nottingham, vessata da un dispotico sceriffo, ed incontra la vedova lady Marian, estremamente scettica sulle reali intenzioni dell’uomo. Nel tentativo di guadagnare la fiducia della donna di cui è ormai innamorato, e nel tentativo di salvare la sua terra, l’arciere fugge nella foresta di Sherwood e mette insieme una banda di fuorilegge che lo aiuti contro lo sceriffo tiranno ed il nuovo sovrano, Giovanni. Robin di Locksley, lascia così il posto a Robin Hood...

Salito sul trono d’Inghilterra nel 1413, dopo una giovinezza trascorsa insieme ad amici scapestrati, Enrico V è un re saggio e rigoroso. Due anni dopo l’ascesa al trono, dichiara guerra a Carlo VI re di Francia. Sbarcato con un esercito non molto numeroso rispetto a quello nemico, ma disciplinato, riesce a far cadere la cittadina di Harfleur e a sbaragliare i nemici nella sanguinosa battaglia di Anzicourt.

Nel 1788 il comportamento di re Giorgio III (1738-1820), sul trono dal 1760, si fa sempre più eccentrico e squilibrato finché è diagnosticato come pazzo e affidato in cura a un medico (I. Holm) che gli insegna a convivere con la sua malattia (porfiria). Nel 1811, definitivamente peggiorato, fu sostituito dal primo dei suoi 15 figli, Giorgio IV.

La storia, sceneggiata da Richard Nelson, racconta la visita di Re Giorgio VI nel 1939 a Hyde Park, nella residenza della famiglia Roosevelt. Si tratta di un momento molto importante sia dal punto di vista storico, considerando che sta per scoppiare la seconda guerra mondiale, che da quello più intimo, visto che Eleanor scopre in quel periodo la relazione tra il marito e sua cugina.

When news of Clarence's death reaches the King, the subsequent grief and remorse bring about his death. Richard is made Lord Protector, with power to rule England while his nephew (now King Edward V) is still a minor. Before the young king's coronation he has his two nephews conveyed to the Tower, ostensibly for their safekeeping. Richard's accomplice, the Duke of Buckingham, then declares the two boys illegitimate and offers Richard the crown, which after a show of reticence he accepts. After Richard's coronation, he and Buckingham have a falling-out over whether or not to assassinate the two children.

This is the story of how a prince became a king, a revealing portrait of our new monarch across the seven decades he spent as heir to the throne. It’s a journey from cradle to crown told almost solely in his own words, from film and television recordings to private home movies and featuring a wealth of material, some of which has never been seen before. As well as drawing on home movies from the Royal Collection, the film-makers were given exclusive access to sequences featuring the prince, shot for the landmark 1969 film Royal Family, including private unseen moments.

His opponents accused him of being homosexual. The male favorites he gathered around him during his short life gave those malevolent enemies solid arguments to do so. He would not have failed if he had proved himself to be an energetic king. But Edward II of England (1284-1327) never was a king like Edward I Longshanks, his father, or Edward III, his son, were. And his end is shrouded in myth and mystery.
