Præsidenten finder støtte hos sin loyale udenrigsminister, William Seward, og det reformvenlige kongresmedlem Thaddeus Stevens. Men i Repræsentanternes Hus yder oppositionen voldsom modstand mod det kontroversielle forslag.
Dramaet 'The Farewell' handler om en kinesisk familie, hvoraf den ene del bor i USA, mens den anden lever i Kina. Her bl.a. familiens bedstemor Nai Nai, der bliver diagnosticeret med kræft, hvilket kun giver hende kort tid tilbage at leve i.
Familien i USA rejser derfor tilbage til Kina under påskud af at deltage i et bryllup. I virkeligheden er det dog for at være sammen med Nai Nai i hendes sidste dage. Dog uden at nogen fortæller bedstemoren, at hendes dage er talte.
For barnebarnet Billi, der rejser fra New York til Kina, bliver forsøget med at navigere i løgnen en svær opgave. Med et ben i hver kultur, skal hun nu respektere familiens ønske, med samtidig også være tro over sig selv og hendes elskede bedstemor.

Sådan gør man normalt i et samfund gennemsyret af korruption, vrede og paranoia, men det er ikke gratis at træde ud på den store glidebane – hverken psykologisk eller moralsk.
