Handlingen er lagt til 1918, når presten Lauritz Smith og hans sønn Oscar kommer tilbake til Norge fra misjonærvirksomhet på Madagaskar. Nå skal de bygge ei ny kirke i et lite gruvesamfunn, men til tross for advarsler fra gruvesjefen Timann, velger presten å starte byggingen på samisk grunn. Det skal vise seg at dette er en gammel gravplass, og snart begynner det å skje mystiske ting i området, samtidig som spanskesyken er i anmarsj.
