예인선 ‘Arctic Warrior’호의 대원들은 거친 파도, 심장을 짖누르는 수압과 싸워가면서 침몰한 배를 인양하는 바다의 베테랑들이다. 이들 앞에 베링해 근방 알라스카 해안에 떠다니는 수수께끼의 괴선박을 인양하자는 제의가 들어오면서 새로운 항해가 시작된다. 망망대해로 모험을 떠난 대원들은 괴선박이 바로 40년전 실종됐던 '안토니아 그라자' 호라는 사실을 알고 흥분에 휩싸이는데...
장프랑수아 밀레의 <이삭 줍는 사람들>이라는 그림에서 시작해 추수가 끝난 대지에 남아 있는 농산물이나 과일들을 줍는 사람들, 개펄에서 조개를 줍는 사람들, 도시의 쓰레기통에서 주운 음식들만 먹고 살아가는 사람들, 그리고 버려진 물건들을 모아서 작품을 만드는 재활용 미술가에 이르기까지 다양한 장소에서 다양한 대상들을 수집하는 사람들의 모습들이 보여진다. 쓸모 없어 보이는 파편더미들 속에서 새로운 가치와 진실들이 발견되기도 하고, 무의미한 대상들이 놀라운 예술작품으로 변모하는 과정이 펼쳐진다.
아녜스 바르다는 마치 일기를 쓰듯이 정겹고 주관적인 형식으로 영화를 구성해 간다. 버려진 것들을 주워서 살아갈 수밖에 없는 가난한 촌부나 도시의 홈리스 등에 대한 묘사가 프랑스 사회 내부의 모순들을 간접적으로 드러내고 있다면, 재활용 미술가나 환경운동가와 같은 사람들의 목소리를 통해서는 현대 사회의 과도하고 무분별한 소비성이 비판되기도 한다.
