Der puertoricanische Sänger Hector Lavoe (1946-1993) gilt als einer der Mitbegründer der Salsa-Bewegung in den Vereinigten Staaten und hat eine Karriere mit allen Höhen und Tiefen durchlebt. Vom steilsten Aufstieg bis zum tiefsten Fall - seine rasante Karriere durchlief alle Stationen. Mit 17 Jahren verlässt er seine Heimat und kommt in die USA, ab da lässt der kometenhafte Aufstieg und der damit verbundene Erfolg nicht lange auf sich warten. Lavoe verkauft Millionen von Alben. Doch als die 70er Jahre vorbei sind, sinkt seine Popularität und als innerhalb kurzer Zeit seine Mutter ermordet wird und sein Bruder sowie sein Sohn ums Leben kommen, fällt er in tiefe Depressionen und begeht sogar einen Selbstmordversuch. Drogen, Alkohol, Medikamente und exzessive Partys vermögen ihn nicht zu heilen und verstärken seinen inneren Schmerz nur noch zusätzlich.

In June and October 1988, D’León demonstrated his live reputation by playing three sell-out concerts at London’s Hackney Empire. The last was recorded and broadcast in 1989 as a programme in BBC television’s Rhythms Of The World world music series, then released as Oscar D’León Live, the first salsa video to be issued in the UK.
