Zweiteilige Verfilmung (1. "Ewige Fesseln", 2. "Heimatlos") des Romans von Victor Hugo: Ein ehemaliger Strafverbannter "Bagnosträfling" lüftet, zu Wohlstand gelangt, sein Inkognito, um die Verurteilung eines Unschuldigen zu verhindern, scheitert aber schließlich an den Nachstellungen der Polizei, muß fliehen und nimmt eine Waise zu sich. Der verfolgte ehemalige Sträfling zieht unter falschem Namen seine Pflegetochter groß und rettet deren 1832 auf den Barrikaden für die Republik kämpfenden Verlobten. Dabei befreit er auch einen seiner ehemaligen Gefangenenaufseher, der ihn erkennt, aber laufen läßt und seinen Dienst quittiert, während der Gehetzte an einer erlittenen Verletzung stirbt. Der fast fünfstündige Schwarz-Weiß-Film wird als eine der besten Verfilmungen des Romans angesehen.
