Oba stroje, plné leteckého palivu, do sebe narazili, nizozemské letadlo dopadlo na ranvej a okamžitě vybuchlo, americké se rozlomilo na dvě části a také začalo hořet. Následky byly katastrofální - v nizozemském zahynulo všech 248 cestujících a členů posádky, v americkém se z 369 lidí na palubě zachránilo 61. Vyšetřování trvalo dlouho a nakonec dospěla komise k závěru, že došlo k lidskému selhání - vinen byl holandský kapitán van Zanten, který pravděpodobně špatně porozuměl pokynům z věže ...
