Dal mare emerge una pesciolina rossa a bordo di una medusa. Rimasta intrappolata in un barattolo di vetro, viene soccorsa e liberata da Sosuke, un bimbo di cinque anni che vive in cima alla scogliera. La gratitudine della pesciolina, che Sosuke battezzerà col nome di Ponyo, si trasforma in tenera amicizia. L'idillio viene però interrotto da Fujimoto, padre di Ponyo e padrone-stregone dei fondali marini. Un tempo umano, Fujimoto ha lasciato la terra per l'acqua prendendo in moglie la Madre del Mare. Decisa a tentare la fuga e a scegliere per sé un destino umano, Ponyo rovescia accidentalmente l'elisir magico del padre, trasformandosi in una bambina e alterando la quiete del mare. Le onde furiose e i pesci giganti la condurranno fino alla casa di Sosuke, dove sarà accolta e amata. Perché il mare si ritiri e restituisca a Ponyo la sua libertà e a Sosuke la sua mamma e il suo villaggio, il bambino dovrà affrontare una prova e riportare l'equilibrio tra il genere umano e la natura.

I Yam What I Yam...L'invenzione' is centered around the collision of two films originally shot on the same location; Emidio Greco's 'L'invenzione di Morel' (1974) and Robert Altman's 'Popeye' (1980). In Greco's film a shipwrecked man stumbles upon an ultra-modernist mansion. In it he finds a group of people trapped in a perpetual present facilitated by a machine that's capable of reproducing reality. Sant's reinvention of this film is shot on the same location, follows the same storyline, but occupies another world. In place of the mansion, he finds himself in 'Sweethaven' - the set of Altman's 'Popeye'. Though there is no trace of Greco's set, Altman's 'Sweethaven' remains - echoing Greco's plot by existing as an open-air museum where costumed entertainers re-enact scenes.

Kiwi stuntman/director Tim McLachlan's film was a finalist in Your Big Break, a filmmaking contest run by Tourism New Zealand which attracted over 1000 scripts from around the globe. Five finalists were given the chance to turn their scripts into a short film. The brief was to "capture the spirit of 100% Pure New Zealand — the youngest country on earth".
