Wiesler bliver mere og mere fascineret af deres liv, og bliver trukket længere ind end han burde.
DDR, 1979. I al hemmelighed arbejder familierne Strelzyk og Wetzel på at konstruere deres egen luftballon, som skal gøre det muligt for dem at flygte til friheden i vest. Det er en farlig og vovet plan, for sikkerhedstjenesten Stasi har informanter alle steder. Og da netop Stasi kommer på sporet af gruppen og deres plan, bliver familiernes flugt en kamp mod uret, hvor hvert sekund tæller.
