Filmas, paremtas tikrais įvykiais, pasakoja apie airių kilmės amerikiečių boksininką Micky „Airį“ Wardą. Micky Wardas nutarė pasirinkti boksininko kelią, įkvėptas savo idealo – netikro brolio ir buvusio boksininko Dicky Eklundo, kuris tapo jo treneriu. Paties Dicky Eklundo šlovės dienos jau praeitis – buvęs boksininkas vartoja narkotikus ir turi problemų su teisėsauga. Brolis įkalbina Micky stoti į kovą su dešimt kilogramų daugiau sveriančiu boksininku. „Airis“ beviltiškai pralaimi ir ryžtasi baigti boksininko karjerą. Tačiau bare sutikta mergina Charlene įkvepia Micky dar kartą stoti į ringą – tik šį kartą jis žengia į ringą be brolio paramos. Ir nugali varžovą. Netrukus Charlene įtikina Micky, kad didžiausios kliūtys kelyje į boksininkų šlovės olimpą yra už ringo ribų – tai problemiška paties kovotojo šeima...
