Diese „Garbage Patches“, Müllstrudel, genannten Phänomene gibt es auch südlich des Äquators. Inzwischen hat man fünf dieser Strudel weltweit gezählt. Nicht selten haben sie mehrere hundert Kilometer Durchmesser. Grobe Schätzungen gehen davon aus, dass sich heute bis zu 150 Millionen Tonnen Plastikmüll in den Meeren befindet, der sich seit 1950 dort gesammelt hat. Ein Großteil davon sammelt sich nicht an der Wasseroberfläche, sondern am Meeresboden oder schwebend in den Wassersäulen. 2011 begleitete ein Filmteam den Umweltaktivisten Marcus Eriksen, der sich maßgeblich für Erforschung der Müllstrudel einsetzt. Er durchquerte den Südpazifik, um damals nicht eindeutig nachgewiesene Müllstrudel auf der Südhalbkugel zu finden, irgendwo zwischen Osterinsel und chilenischem Festland.
