Han er rebel for balladens skyld, men er i bund og grund også drevet af en respekt for livet, som ellers er en mangelvare i krigstid. Han hjælper således flere af sine medrekrutter til at komme ud af hæren, men gør ikke lige så meget for selv at komme ud. Det er en glimrende film om en absurd tid.
